The Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES) is a non–profit organization with over 25 years of experience providing public legal education and justice system capacity building in Canada and overseas. Internationally, JES has programs in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Guyana which work with national institutions to strengthen justice systems, access to justice and citizen security. JES has offices in Guatemala, Honduras and Guyana and has diverse sources of funding including private donors and provincial, federal and overseas governments. THE PROJECT
The “Guatemalan Institutional Justice Strengthening (GIJS)” project has been designed to deliver an impactful and sustainable series of interrelated components to support the Public Ministry of Guatemala. This is a four-year project, which started on August 1, 2018 and runs to July 31, 2022, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) in which JES will play a central role in the management of project’s execution, from baseline needs assessment to implementation to final evaluation, JES will deliver the project transparently on schedule and within the allocated budget. JES provides world-class expert leadership at every stage of the process, ensuring the use of best-practices and leaving installed capacity at the Ministry for the long-term sustainability of the program.
THE ROLE
The Bilingual Researcher/Writer for the GIJS project is responsible for the compilation and presentation of information for various donor and stakeholder audiences. This role is a project-funded position reporting directly to the Project Director and is critical in ensuring that all project reporting is delivered on-time and with a high standard. Success in this post depends on the support from the Project Coordinators and Officers to provide relevant information about activities, so that the Researcher/Writer can develop compelling narrative and monitoring and evaluation reports. Key responsibilities include: Report writing in Spanish and English, basic graphic design, presentation development, editing materials and desk-based research.
The Project Researcher/Writer, based in the JES office in Guatemala City, is directly supervised by the Project Manager. Their capacity to develop clear and concise reports to meet strict deadlines is fundamental to the project’s success. Overall, the work of the Project Researcher/Writer supports accurate and on-time reporting about project activities and outcomes to stakeholders, which will ensure that JES’ partners are engaged in the project.

DUTIES
Administrative Functions and Support to Management
-Directly assist the Project Manager in the timely delivery of project reports
-Draft documents as required, including: Narrative reports, monitoring & evaluation reports, project plans and context briefs
-Compile weekly project reports based on activity reports from Project Coordinators
-Recommend improved reporting designs, presentation templates or communication materials
-Organize and maintain physical files and cloud-based databases of project-information
-Ensure the good use of JES resources

Investigation
-Work directly with project staff and partners to collect information about project activities
-Interview stakeholders, follow up with training participants and conduct surveys as required
-Collect information related to milestone and event
-Maintain a cloud-based database of project information, including reports, photography and statistical information
-Research and summarize news reports for contextual analysis reports
-Support the Project Officers and Coordinators to gather and organize information
-Maintain a calendar of project activities for management

Communications and Report Writing
-Compile information about diverse project activities and outcomes
-Review and finalize reports with standardized templates
-Edit draft reports from colleagues for external audiences
-Develop new communication materials, presentations and templates
-Design infographics and visualizations that simplify complex information

Confidentiality and Compliance
-Ensure the highest level of confidentiality of information accessed.
-Participate in meetings and other activities organized by JES for its employees.
-Work with respect, decency and professional responsibility in the execution of all activities and in the day-to-day interactions with coworkers and management.

PROFILE OF THE PROJECT RESEARCHER/WRITER FOR THE GIJS PROJECT

Education
- University Course work complete (pensum cerrado) in public relations, journalism, development or related field. (Required)

Professional Experience
- Proven project work with international non-profit organizations, cooperation agencies, justice institutions and/or consulting firms (Required)
- Effective report writing for internationally-funded projects (Required)
- Research and reporting in English and Spanish (Required)
- Baseline research and survey work (Preferred)
- Monitoring and evaluation of projects (Preferred)
- Research and reporting about institutional justice programs or other public sector services (Preferred)
- Development of public relations materials for stakeholder engagement (Preferred)

Languages
- Advanced Spanish (Required)
- Advanced English (Required)

Competencies
- Public relations, interinstitutional and interpersonal relationship building, teamwork, institutional communications, graphic design, consensus building and report writing.(Required)
- Microsoft Office, e-mail and communications software. (Required)

Aptitudes
- Leadership, responsible, optimistic, proactive, capable of complex analysis, discrete, punctual and cooperative. (Required)

Other Experiences or Training
- Seminars, course work or experience related to vulnerable victim services, case management, or the development of technology platforms. (Preferred)
- Design of manuals or public information campaigns (Preferred)
- Seminars, course work or experience related to Results Based Management or monitoring and evaluation. (Preferred)
- Strong knowledge of the practices and processes of justice sector institutions in Guatemala (Preferred)
- Guatemalan citizen
