Position Summary
The mission of San Diego State University’s Analytic Studies & Institutional Research (ASIR) is to broadly support Academic Affairs including academic colleges, Enrollment Services, Faculty Advancement & Student Success Resource Management, and Student Affairs with information to inform decision-making. To do so, ASIR leverages available technical resources and staff expertise to ensure data integrity, develop data tools, build partnerships, promote data literacy, conduct in-depth analyses and activate predictive modeling for operational and strategic needs that support campus decision-making. ASIR is also responsible for collecting, reviewing, and validating student data and faculty workload for the Enrollment Reporting System (ERS) and Academic Planning Data Base (APDB) required by the Chancellor’s Office.
The Analytic Studies & Institutional Research (ASIR) office is seeking a higher education data professional to serve as the Data Engineer (Analyst/Programmer - Career). The primary purpose of the Data Engineer position is two-fold. First, this position will support technical aspects of the operation including database management, and responsibilities related to storing, transforming, and organizing data stored in ASIR’s database server. This includes Student Information System data (SIMSR and Peoplesoft Campus Solutions), survey data, campus, and external data. This position will apply database skills to ensure efficient data management and data integrity in partnership with the IT Division and will serve as ASIR’s technical liaison as necessary. In addition to providing database programming support for ASIR’s operation, this position will also serve the ASIR team in developing data sets for the Statistical Modeling Group’s predictive analytics project, student success exploration as well as responding to ad hoc data requests. In addition, the incumbent may also work directly with campus stakeholders to better understand their needs and help organize data to address their questions.
The functions of the Data Engineer position include implementing database solutions, analyzing data, building dashboards, assessing campus data needs, and delivering information to campus constituents. In consultation with ASIR staff, the Data Engineer will also help fine-tune processes for regular and census reporting. The Data Engineer position will also monitor campus issues, CSU policy changes to help anticipate the impact of these changes on ASIR processes and systems. Additional functions may also include Tableau dashboard development as necessary to meet campus user demand and serving as a data liaison with college users to respond proactively to data needs and guide data understanding and interpretation.
The Data Engineer requires excellent SQL and database skills as well as strong analytical skills. In addition, the position requires strong attention to detail, a deep understanding of institutional data and processes, the ability to work independently, awareness and application of higher education issues, and SDSU academic policies specifically. Under the general supervision of the ASIR Assistant Vice President, the Data Engineer requires the ability to translate complex institutional data needs into usable information for university decision-makers. Other related duties as assigned. Strong analytical, statistical, communication, and technical skills are essential.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Candidate Qualifications
Basic foundation of knowledge and skills in applications programming and systems analysis and related programming support functions is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Analyst/Programmer, depending on the position assignment, may include working knowledge of a specific industry standard applications programming language and knowledge of standard systems analysis techniques

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
Master’s degree/graduate study in Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Data Science or other related field

Three years of progressively responsible technical experience

Experience with Peoplesoft Campus Solutions and Peoplesoft HR

Advanced proficiency with SQL server, R, Tableau, Excel, Qualtrics, and programming languages such as Python

Strong technical and analytical skills

Experience in higher education Institutional Research

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,083 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,372 - $10,792 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
