We are looking for a volunteer to supportone of our hosts in Guatemala, the Agrocadena Caprina, with virtual and in-country technical assistance related tosmall ruminant (goat) health, genetics and livestock production models. Please see a general description of the scope of work for this technical assistance below: Genetic Improvement Specialist for Goats: The Agrocadena Caprina de Guatemala (Agriculture and Goat National Production Chain) works with governmental and non-governmental institutions to create and resolve barriers to productivity in the Guatemalan small ruminant market. A F2F volunteer is requested to provide webinars on the topic of Genetic Improvement in Goat Herds for Dairy Purposes in Tropical Climates to a group of Guatemalan goat farmers. It is expected that at the end of the assignment they will have a better understanding of breeding or genetic improvement practices they can employ without purchasing expensive genetic material. This assignment contributes to the broader goals and objectives of the Rural Enterprise Development project by improving the strengthening and capacities of the small ruminant producers. Animal Health Specialist for Goats: The Agrocadena Caprina de Guatemala (Agriculture and Goat National Production Chain) works with governmental and non-governmental institutions to create and resolve barriers to productivity in the Guatemalan small ruminant market. To build producer capacity, a F2F volunteer is requested to provide webinars on the topic of Animal Health in Dairy Goat Herds with emphasis on Brucellosis, Tuberculosis and Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE). It is expected that at the end of the assignment the farmers and technicians will have a better understanding of these diseases and protocols to prevent the spread of these diseases. This assignment contributes to the broader goals and objectives of the Rural Enterprise Development project by improving the strengthening the capacities of smallholder farmers in Guatemala. Livestock Production Model Specialist for Goats: The Agrocadena Caprina de Guatemala (Agriculture and Goat National Production Chain) works with governmental and non-governmental institutions to create and resolve barriers to productivity in the Guatemalan small ruminant market. To build producer capacity, a F2F volunteer is requested to provide webinars on the topic of Production Systems and Livestock Models for Dairy Goat Herds to a group of goat farmers from Guatemala. It is expected that at the end of the assignment that participants will have a better understanding of production models in tropical environments for dairy goat herds to improve production practices. This assignment contributes to the broader goals and objectives of the Rural Enterprise Development project by improving the strengthening and capacities of the farmers from the National Goat Agri chain of Guatemala. Remote Volunteers must be U.S. Citizens or have a current U.S. working visa. Local Volunteers must have experience in the aforementioned fields and ability to connect and engage with the remote U.S. volunteer. Please see the description of the Farmer to Farmer remote volunteers and local volunteers below: Remote volunteers willsupport through document sharing, photo or video sharing, video calls, webinars etc. These will not be a Farmer to Farmer “assignment,” in the traditional sense, but rather a deliverable-driven technical assistance that is catered to the specific needs of the host. This assistance will not assume the typical 15-day format, but will respond to the host on an as-needed basis (one 2hr training per week for 3 weeks, for example). Remote volunteers may be paired with local volunteers and asked to collaborate to provide support to the hosting organization throughout the assignment. In this collaborative model, we ask that the remote volunteer and local volunteer work together to agree on final recommendations to provide to the host for improvement. Volunteer requirements for this assignment include: Education: B.Sc. or master’s degree in Agriculture Science or Animal Science or Experienced Ruminant Farmer (with experience in Ruminant Nutrition) Experience: 5 years’ experience in nutrition of small ruminants Language: English Experience working in a developing country preferred Flexibility Ability to work via videoconference and with other remote arrangements NOTES: 3 openings. Additional Salary Information: This program covers all volunteer costs including airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and other assignment-related expenses.
